Community Reception

The announcement has been met with enthusiasm from classic anime fans and preservation advocates. Heavy Metal L-Gaim, directed by the legendary Yoshiyuki Tomino (Mobile Suit Gundam), is a particularly notable addition — the complete series with OVAs arriving on a streaming platform marks an important milestone for accessibility of 1980s mecha anime. The inclusion of Tatsunoko Productions titles like Urashiman and Time Bokan: Royal Revival has also drawn attention from retro anime collectors and fans of the studio's distinctive visual style.

What This Means

HIDIVE continues to carve out a niche as a destination for classic and cult anime alongside its simulcast lineup. This June 2026 drop of nine titles — spanning the 1970s through 1990s — represents one of the most substantial classic anime additions to any streaming service this year. The inclusion of Yoshiyuki Tomino's Heavy Metal L-Gaim is particularly significant for mecha fans, as the series has had limited legal streaming availability in the West. For fans of Tatsunoko Productions' iconic character designs and vintage animation styles, this is an excellent opportunity to explore or revisit these influential works.
