The first promotional video for the television anime adaptation of Hitoshi Iwaaki's Historie manga has revealed 11 new cast members, the second teaser visual, and confirmed the series' January 2027 premiere. The historical epic from LIDEN FILMS adapts the acclaimed manga by the creator of Parasyte (寄生獣 Kiseijū).

Lead Voice Actor

Nobunaga Shimazaki (who previously voiced Shinichi Izumi in the Parasyte -the maxim- anime — a fitting connection to Iwaaki's earlier work) stars as the protagonist Eumenes, a young Greek scribe and general who would go on to serve Alexander the Great.

Additional Cast

The newly announced cast members bring the ancient Greek world to life:

  • Ryōta Suzuki as Hieronymous, Eumenes' older brother
  • Kazuya Ichijō as Hieronymous (the Elder), Eumenes' father
  • Yūko Kaida as Telesilla, Eumenes' mother
  • Wataru Takagi as Charon, a slave serving the Hieronymous family
  • Satoshi Tsuruoka as Hecateus, a close aide to Hieronymous
  • Anri Katsu as Thrax, a Scythian slave
  • Tsuguo Mogami as Aristotle, the great philosopher of ancient Greece
  • Miki Kariya as Perialla, Eumenes' childhood close friend
  • Seiyū Fujiwara as Nicogenes, Eumenes' school friend
  • Junya Enoki as Tolmides, Eumenes' friend

About the Manga

Hitoshi Iwaaki's Historie (ヒストリエ) began serialization in Kodansha's Afternoon magazine in October 2004. Iwaaki conceived the story over four decades ago and began sketching it more than 20 years before serialization. The manga follows Eumenes, a historical figure who rose from humble origins to become a trusted secretary and general to Alexander the Great, chronicling his journey through the politically treacherous world of ancient Greece and the expanding Macedonian Empire.

The manga has been a major critical success, with over 4.7 million copies in circulation. It has won the Japan Media Arts Festival Manga Division Excellence Award (2010), the 16th Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize (2012), and the Best General Manga award at the 49th Kodansha Manga Awards (2025). Kodansha's K MANGA service is releasing the series in English.

"B.C. 356. The kingdom of Macedonia. Eumenes, a young boy who was born and raised in a small and weak city-state on the outskirts of the great kingdom of Macedonia. One day, he meets a fortune teller who uses blood. She told him that he will live as a slave forever, but also that he will receive the opportunity to become the man who rules the world..."

Production

The anime is being produced by LIDEN FILMS, the studio known for Yamada-kun and the Seven Witches, Terror in Resonance (co-production), Tokyo Revengers, and most recently the critically acclaimed Dandelion. The series debuts in January 2027 (Winter 2027 season).

Community Reception

The Historie manga holds an 8.34 score on MyAnimeList (scored by 7,442 users), ranked #351 overall, with approximately 80% of users rating it 8 or higher. Nearly 50% of voters give it a 9 or 10, reflecting its status as a critically revered work among those who have read it. The announcement of the anime adaptation — and particularly the first PV revealing the depth of the cast — has been met with enthusiasm from manga fans who have waited over two decades for an animated adaptation. The casting of Nobunaga Shimazaki as Eumenes has been well-received, with fans noting the poetic symmetry of his returning to voice a protagonist from Iwaaki's work after his role as Shinichi in Parasyte. The setting — ancient Greece during the rise of Alexander the Great — is relatively unexplored in anime, adding to the anticipation.

What This Means

Historie represents one of the most prestigious manga adaptation projects of the coming year. With Iwaaki's masterwork — a meticulously researched historical epic that has taken two decades to build its audience — finally receiving an anime adaptation from LIDEN FILMS, the series has all the ingredients for a standout historical drama. The January 2027 premiere positions it as a major title for the Winter season. For fans of mature, historically grounded storytelling in the vein of Vinland Saga and Kingdom, Historie is shaping up to be essential viewing.
