Production I.G has unveiled the first details for a new Kaiju No. 8 anime short titled “Narumi’s Week at Work” (Narumi no Heijitsu), which will premiere in Fall 2026. The short, conceived by Kizuku Watanabe (creator of the Kaiju No. 8: Relax spinoff manga), puts the spotlight squarely on Gen Narumi — the Defense Force’s effortlessly overpowered and gloriously insufferable First Division captain.

Key Announcement Details

The staff from the main television anime is returning for this short. Director Shigeyuki Miya returns alongside character designer and chief animation director Tetsuya Nishio, composer Yuta Bando, and animation studio Production I.G. Notably, Mahiro Maeda (Khara) is handling kaiju designs, with Shinji Kimura (Tekkonkinkreet) serving as art director.

Koki Uchiyama reprises his role as Gen Narumi, the fan-favorite anti-kaiju powerhouse known for his overwhelming strength and equally overwhelming attitude problems. The story follows Narumi during his less-than-peaceful work week as he dodges meetings, skips paperwork, and plays online games — only to face unexpected counterattacks.

Community Reception

News of the Narumi-focused short has generated significant excitement among Kaiju No. 8 fans on social media, with many celebrating the decision to spotlight the series’ most popular supporting character. Narumi’s irreverent personality and stylish combat scenes made him a standout in both Season 1 and Season 2, and the prospect of a comedic slice-of-life style story set within the kaiju defense force has been warmly received. The manga has maintained strong popularity rankings on MANGA Plus since its 2020 debut, and the anime franchise continues to grow with the game release and compilation film.

What This Means

The short expands the Kaiju No. 8 universe beyond the main storyline, following the earlier “Kaiju No. 8: Hoshina’s Day Off” video anime. With Season 2 having premiered in July 2025 and the manga having concluded in July 2025, this short demonstrates continued investment in the franchise. The series also has an October 24 “Defense Force Boot Camp in Tachikawa” event planned at Tachikawa Stage Garden in Tokyo, featuring the main anime cast.
