Story Synopsis
Araki, Stella, and Olga are high school students living in a cozy downtown neighborhood. Playing games, visiting the bathhouse, and heading home — this is the story of their everyday lives… or is there more to it?
The series is based on Hajime Shinagawa's story, which won the grand prize in the "Kids/Game" category of the Project Anima competition in 2019. Mebius Dust is the third anime produced from Project Anima winners, following Sakugan (2021) and The Story of the Girl Who Couldn't Become a Wizard (2024).
Community Reception
The main trailer has garnered 10,000+ views on YouTube with a mix of curiosity and cautious optimism. Doga Kobo — best known for slice-of-life and romantic comedy titles like Oshi no Ko, Love Live!, and Monthly Girls' Nozaki-kun — is venturing into original action anime for the first time, which has generated interest but also some skepticism.
Fans on MyAnimeList have noted concerns about Project Anima's track record, with earlier entries struggling to maintain quality beyond their premieres. However, the involvement of Leo Ieiri (a well-known pop artist) for the opening theme and DÉ DÉ MOUSE for the soundtrack has been positively received.
"Doga Kobo's first original action anime — I'm curious how they'll handle the battle choreography." — Fan comment
What This Means
As Doga Kobo's first original action series, Mebius Dust represents a significant creative expansion for the studio beyond its established slice-of-life and comedy repertoire. The July 9 premiere will be closely watched by industry observers to see if the studio can successfully pivot to action-driven storytelling.
