NHK announced on May 26 that Kazumi Yamashita's Twisted Sisters manga will receive a live-action television series adaptation, set to air on BS and BSP4K beginning January 2027. The show will span 10 episodes and stars Miori Takimoto as protagonist Rikako Ioroi.
Story and Cast
The series follows manga artist Rikako, who reunites with her estranged sisters over their dying father's will. The will demands the five sisters live together in a mansion — and in the process, Rikako discovers a secret sister she never knew existed. The premise blends family drama with mystery as the sisters navigate their complicated relationships under one roof.
Screenwriters Masao Iketani and Tomomi Maruyama will co-write the screenplay, with Takashi Ninomiya directing the series.
About the Manga
Yamashita launched Twisted Sisters in Kodansha's Morning magazine in June 2021. Kodansha shipped the ninth compiled volume on January 22. The manga has built a steady readership for its nuanced take on sibling dynamics, grief, and the secrets families keep.
Yamashita is best known internationally for Land, which ran in Morning from March 2014 to July 2020 across 11 volumes, and is published in English by Yen Press. Yen Press also publishes Yamashita's Wonder Boy manga in English, alongside Twisted Sisters.
Community Reception
Fans of Yamashita's work have reacted with excitement to the live-action announcement, praising the casting of Miori Takimoto and noting that the family drama format suits NHK's prestige drama slate. The series has been drawing comparisons to other acclaimed family-centric Japanese dramas, with particular attention on how the screenwriters will adapt the manga's internal character work into the live-action format. The January 2027 timeslot on BS and BSP4K also signals NHK's confidence in the property as a high-quality production.
Sales and Impact
With nine volumes published and a growing international readership through Yen Press, Twisted Sisters has carved out a solid niche in the family drama manga space. The live-action adaptation is expected to significantly boost the manga's profile and sales as the January 2027 premiere approaches.
