As HBO plots a Baldur's Gate 3 sequel series, the future of the legendary Dungeons & Dragons RPG franchise seemed unclear — especially after Larian Studios chose to pursue a new Divinity title instead of Baldur's Gate 4. Now, a new report suggests what's next is a return to the past: Baldur's Gate 2 is getting a remake, with the original game likely receiving the same treatment.
The Report
PC Gamer, with a hat tip to IGN, first broke the news. According to sources familiar with the project, ex-BioWare veteran and BG2 co-lead designer Kevin Martens — who later worked on Diablo 3 and most recently on Archetype Entertainment's upcoming Exodus — is part of the project. Martens is reportedly already working on the Baldur's Gate 2 remake.
"According to a source familiar with the project, Martens is already working on the Baldur's Gate 2 remake. If both games are making a comeback — which makes a lot more sense than just the second game, given that it's a direct continuation of BG1 — this suggests that the remakes are being developed concurrently." — PC Gamer's Fraser Brown
What About Baldur's Gate 1?
The report indicates that while it's only confident about the existence of the BG2 remake, the original Baldur's Gate is "likely" getting the same treatment. Developing both simultaneously would make sense for a cohesive relaunch of the classic Infinity Engine duology.
Gameplay & Release Window
Gameplay and release window details remain unclear. The remakes could adopt a more traditional take on the original combat systems rather than Baldur's Gate 3's turn-based approach. At the time of writing, Hasbro says it won't comment on rumours, and Kevin Martens did not respond in time for publication.
Context
Last month, Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast — who own the Dungeons & Dragons and Baldur's Gate IP — cancelled a single-player action-adventure D&D game made by Star Wars Jedi director Stig Asmussen. Other D&D-based games, like the recently announced Warlock, are in development, but nothing has been said officially about Baldur's Gate 4 by a different studio yet.
Community Reception
The news has been met with widespread excitement across social media and RPG communities. Fans on Reddit's r/baldursgate and r/rpg are cautiously optimistic, with many hoping the remakes will preserve the original's deep tactical combat while modernizing the presentation. The return of Kevin Martens — a key figure behind the original BG2's acclaimed story and systems — has been particularly well-received.
