Xbox has officially delayed the highly anticipated Fable reboot from fall 2026 to February 2027, a move widely attributed to clearing space from the impending launch of Grand Theft Auto VI and other major holiday releases. The announcement came via an Xbox post on Friday, May 29, confirming that Playground Games' fantasy RPG will now arrive early next year.

"In order to plan our game launches through the holidays, in a way that works best for players, we're moving Fable to February 2027 so it can have the dedicated moment it deserves," Xbox stated.

The Delay and the GTA 6 Shadow

Xbox's post highlighted the crowded fall 2026 lineup, explicitly citing Halo: Campaign Evolved and Grand Theft Auto VI (scheduled for November 19) as reasons for wanting to give Fable breathing room. The decision follows months of industry speculation that publishers were quietly shifting big-budget releases away from GTA 6's launch window.

"The game is in great shape. The team feels really good. We're excited about where the game is," said Matt Booty, Xbox Chief Content Officer, on the Official Xbox Podcast. "We really just wanted [Fable] to have its own moment to shine."

Developer Notes

Developer Playground Games originally unveiled the Fable reboot in 2020, targeting a 2025 release before it was pushed back to fall 2026. The team continues to refine the game's open-world fantasy RPG experience, which is being built on the ForzaTech engine — the same technology powering the Forza Horizon series.

Despite the delay, Xbox has confirmed that a "major new look" at Fable will be shown during the Xbox Games Showcase on June 7, alongside new game announcements and in-depth looks at upcoming titles like Gears of War: E-Day.

Community Reception

The delay has generated mixed reactions across social media. On Reddit's r/xbox, many fans expressed understanding, noting that launching any major RPG within weeks of GTA 6 would be commercially unwise. Others voiced frustration at yet another delay for a game first teased six years ago. On Twitter/X, the announcement drew both supportive posts about "letting the devs cook" and skeptical comments questioning whether February 2027 would stick.

Platforms and Release Window

Fable is targeting a February 2027 release on Xbox Series X|S, PC, and will be available day one on Xbox Game Pass. A specific date has not yet been announced.

What's Next

All eyes are on the Xbox Games Showcase on June 7, where Playground Games is expected to reveal new gameplay footage and potentially a more specific release window. With the extra development time, fans are hoping for a polished, ambitious RPG that lives up to the beloved Fable legacy.
