Hello Games has released the Swarm update for No Man's Sky, introducing a universe-ending threat from the mysterious World of Glass, massive hundred-ship space battles, and a community-driven faction war system inspired by Splatoon's Splatfests.
Swarm follows April's Pokemon-like Xeno Arena update and is the latest in a decade-long streak of free content updates for Hello Games' ever-expanding space exploration title. The update is now available on all platforms.
The Hive of Glass Threat
Something new and foreboding is hanging in the sky above planets — a colossal orb-like structure called the Hive of Glass, connected to the World of Glass that has been teased throughout No Man's Sky's lore. "Something new, huge and foreboding is hanging in the sky above planets," Hello Games teased in its announcement. "Unlike anything we've seen before."
The Swarm update introduces what Hello Games is calling a "combined community effort to figure out what is going on." Players must cooperate, strategize, and compete as the war against the Hive unfolds, with contributions recorded in both the Anomaly and across the broader universe.
Faction Warfare and Splatoon-Style Selection
One of the most surprising additions is a faction-selection system reminiscent of Splatoon's Splatfests. Before engaging with the Swarm content, players answer a personality test that determines which of three factions they're assigned to. Each faction competes to contribute the most to the war effort, with community-wide progress tracking and rewards.
Hundred-ship space battles form the core of the new combat content. Players will engage in massive fleet engagements against the Hive's forces, with allied AI ships providing support in the largest-scale space combat No Man's Sky has ever offered.
Community Reception
The No Man's Sky community on Reddit's r/NoMansSkyTheGame has responded enthusiastically to the Swarm update, with the trailer amassing thousands of upvotes within hours of release. The faction system in particular has drawn praise for adding meaningful community-wide stakes to the game's narrative events. On Steam, No Man's Sky maintains a "Very Positive" recent review rating, with Hello Games' continued free update model receiving consistent appreciation from players.
What's Next
The Swarm update is available now as a free update on PC (Steam, GOG), PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. As with previous No Man's Sky updates, Swarm is part of an ongoing narrative arc that Hello Games has been building through its free post-launch content since 2016. Given the game's history of surprises, players can expect additional story developments in the coming weeks as the community-wide Swarm event progresses.
