Developer S-Game has announced a delay for Phantom Blade Zero, pushing the highly anticipated action-RPG's launch from its original window to October 29, 2026 on PC and PlayStation 5. Studio head Soulframe (Liang Qiu) issued a lengthy personal apology explaining the decision.
"I am truly sorry for the delay, and I want to thank everyone who has continued to follow and support Phantom Blade Zero," Soulframe wrote. "This summer, we will have much more to show you. I believe every extra day of waiting will be worth it."
Why the Delay?
In an extensive statement, Soulframe explained that the team saw "one final opportunity" to make "another meaningful leap forward" during the final months of development. The additional time will be used for upgrading character models, reworking environments, and ensuring visual quality without relying heavily on ray tracing.
"We do not want to release Phantom Blade Zero knowing there is still an opportunity to take it one step further." — Soulframe, S-Game Studio Head
Soulframe acknowledged that ray tracing could improve visuals, but emphasized that the studio's primary goal is to "make sure the core look, atmosphere, and intensity of Phantom Blade Zero come through at full force for as many players as possible." The delay, while unable to "solve everything," will provide enough time for "a number of clearly defined and genuinely important improvements."
State of Play Presence
Phantom Blade Zero had a strong showing at the June 2026 State of Play, where S-Game confirmed that pre-orders will open alongside a full trailer this summer. A dedicated 15-20 minute gameplay and story deep dive — highlighting combat, exploration, world design, and progression systems — is also planned for late summer.
Phantom Blade Zero will remain a PlayStation console exclusive for at least 12 months after its October 29 launch.
Community Reception
The delay was met with understanding from the game's community, with many appreciating the transparency of Soulframe's detailed explanation. On social media and forums, sentiment was generally supportive — players prefer a polished delayed release over a rushed product. The promise of entirely new in-game footage in the upcoming trailer has helped maintain positive momentum.
Some skepticism remains among those who recall other high-profile Chinese action games that faced similar delays, but S-Game's consistent communication and impressive previous showings have earned it considerable goodwill.
Game Background
Phantom Blade Zero is a dark fantasy action-RPG inspired by Chinese martial arts fiction (wuxia). It features fast-paced combat combining swordsmanship, gunplay, and supernatural abilities. The game has drawn comparisons to Sekiro and Devil May Cry for its demanding combat system and visual flair. Originally announced with significant buzz, it has been one of the most anticipated releases from Chinese studio S-Game.
