Kohei Ikeda — game director of Tekken 8 — has announced his departure from Bandai Namco after two decades at the company. His exit means the three most senior developers on Tekken 8 have now left the company within the past year.

"I am deeply proud that I had the opportunity to create games alongside such incredible people who poured their hearts into this work. While my role leading the team as game director is coming to a close, the values that both I personally and the Tekken project have always cherished — staying close to the fans and the community and building the game together with everyone — will never change." — Kohei Ikeda

Ikeda added that he has entrusted those values to "the incredible team that will continue to shape the future of Tekken" and indicated he will "continue taking on new challenges as a game developer." He has not yet revealed his next move.

Senior Exodus

Ikeda's departure follows Katsuhiro Harada, Tekken 8 executive game director and series figurehead, who left Bandai Namco in December 2025, followed by Yohei Shimbori, producer, who departed in August 2025. Harada has since established a new studio backed by SNK.

Timing and Controversy

The announcement comes at a turbulent time for Tekken 8. While official support has continued — including the recent reveal of Grappler Baki's Yujiro Hanma as the game's next DLC character — recent major updates have been received poorly by the fanbase.

The game's Season 3 patch garnered significant frustration, with fans expressing dissatisfaction at the game's overly aggressive nature persisting despite developer pledges to bring things "back to basics." While Bandai Namco announced emergency patches in response, it marked a continuous air of frustration surrounding the game.

What's Next for Tekken?

The future of the Tekken series remains uncertain. Harada has previously commented on the franchise's future in new hands, believing it won't be hard for the series to "continue with someone else." However, with all three of its most senior creative leads now gone, the next chapter of the legendary fighting franchise will be charted by a new generation of developers at Bandai Namco.
