Kodansha announced the winners of its milestone 50th annual Manga Awards on May 11, 2026, with Gachiakuta winning Best Shōnen Manga, Re-Living My Life with a Boyfriend Who Doesn't Remember Me winning Best Shōjo Manga, and The Darwin Incident winning Best General Manga.
Best Shōnen Manga: Gachiakuta
Kei Urana and Hideyoshi Ando's Gachiakuta took the top shōnen prize, beating out strong competition including The Fragrant Flower Blooms With Dignity, Ichi the Witch, and Utsura nai ndesu. The gritty fantasy series follows Rudo, a boy cast out from his floating city into a wasteland below, where he gains the ability to turn objects into weapons. Known for its distinctive street-art inspired art style and high-octane action, Gachiakuta has been a rising star in Weekly Shonen Magazine since its 2022 debut and has already inspired an upcoming anime adaptation.
Best Shōjo Manga: Re-Living My Life with a Boyfriend Who Doesn't Remember Me
Written by Eiko Mutsuhana with art by Yugiri Aika and Gin Shirakawa, this time-loop romance won Best Shōjo Manga. The story follows a woman who gets a second chance at love after being transported back in time, only to find her boyfriend doesn't remember their shared past. It won against In the Clear Moonlit Dusk, A Star Brighter Than the Sun, and Gazing at the Star Next Door.
Best General Manga: The Darwin Incident
Shun Umezawa's The Darwin Incident won the Best General Manga category. The thought-provoking sci-fi series explores themes of identity and humanity through the story of a human-animal hybrid. It was nominated alongside Spacewalking With You, Nezumi's First Love, and others.
Prize Details
Winners receive a certificate and bronze statue. Shōnen and Shōjo winners each receive 2 million yen (~US$12,730), while the General winner receives 1 million yen (~US$6,365). The selection committee included industry legends Hiro Mashima (Fairy Tail), Hikaru Nakamura (Arakawa Under the Bridge), Seimaru Amagi, and others.
The 50th iteration of the awards highlights the continued dominance of Weekly Shonen Magazine titles (Gachiakuta), while the shōjo and general categories reflect the broad diversity of modern manga — from romantic time-loops to philosophical sci-fi.
Community Reception
Reactions on social media were largely positive, with Gachiakuta fans celebrating the win as validation of the series' unique art direction and worldbuilding. Many noted the strong competition in the shōnen category, with some expressing surprise that The Fragrant Flower Blooms With Dignity didn't take the prize. In the shōjo category, Re-Living My Life's win was seen as recognition of the growing popularity of time-loop romance narratives. The Darwin Incident's win was widely praised as a win for thoughtful, mature manga storytelling.
